About
Comann Eachdraidh an Rubha (Point Historical Society) began in 1982 and covers the area known as Point over the Braigh to the east of Stornoway. The Society was originally based at Aird Schoolhouse, where it had exhibition and storage facilities, but had to vacate these premises when they were sold. In January 2014, following a number of years without a permanent base, the Comann Eachdraidh was given accommodation in the former Knock School, which had been taken over by community group Urras Storas An Rubha. A refurbishment project for the whole building is currently underway and due for completion by end June 2022. This will create exhibition, storage and office space at the redeveloped building, which will be called Aros An Rubha.
The following exhibitions have been mounted between 2014 and 2020: Shops and Shopping; World War 1 (including the Iolaire); World War 2; Boats and Fishing. Work is under way at present in researching material relating to Àirighean – the summer shielings that the people of Point went to on the moors between Stornoway and Achmore, initially for summer grazing for livestock. This will be the first exhibition in the newly refurbished premises.
