About
The West Side Historical Society (Comann Eachdraidh an Taobh Siar, or CEATS) was formed in 1981 and covers the townships of Shawbost, Bragar, Arnol and Dalbeg. The society is based in Ionad na Seann Sgoil – a community centre based in the old school – and has undertaken extensive genealogical and croft history research for the area, some of which has been uploaded onto Hebridean Connections. The society publishes a quarterly magazine, Fuaran, and has also published two books of croft histories, Eachdraidh nan Croitean.
As well as the croft and genealogical histories, an extensive archive of photographs, oral histories, songs and research on various topics has been collected. The Society also has some objects in its collection from the former Shawbost Museum.
